WPTLA - Western Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association

Annual Essay Contest

The Western Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association sponsors an annual essay contest for western Pennsylvania high school seniors. Each participating school is invited to select and enter one essay for consideration by the essay committee. Three winners are chosen and each is awarded the Western Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers President’s Scholarship of $1,000.00.

This year’s essay topic dealt with the domestic eavesdropping program implemented by the Bush administration after 9/11, and whether those measures are an unconstitutional invasion of privacy, or a legal necessity to protect the United States from terrorist attacks.

Sixteen (16) essays were submitted. All of the essays were impressive and our congratulations go out to the students and schools that participated for a job well done. This year’s winners were :

Michael Liptak, of Norwin High School in Irwin, PA
Sarah Keller of Greensburg Salem High School in Greensburg, PA
Christina Genareo of Laurel High School in New Castle, PA

The winners and their parents were invited to attend the Judiciary Dinner held on May 5th where they received their scholarships and a certificate in recognition of this accomplishment. No doubt these bright students will continue to excel in their post high school endeavors and we wish them very best.
